Except for the 3rd night (the 1st night back from hospital), Sarah has
practically slept from 10pm to 7am with only 1 4am feed since day 1 in
hospital. She slept a good 6 hrs from the day she turned 1 mth. And that
was when she was exclusively bf. After that, I guess doesn't count since I
switched to ff'g, but she has always been a very good sleeper at night.
After 6mos, she was sleeping from 8pm to 7am.

With Daniel, he started sleeping through from Week 6. But then this sleep
pattern kept being interrupted by growth spurts every so often. He has only
just started being very consistent about 2 or 3 mths ago, when he'd sleep
through anytime from 8pm to 10pm until next morning 6 to 7am.

So, the bottomline is - there really is no straight answer to this question.
Every baby is different.

Vivi still feeds several times some nights, I think. She never fully wakes
up and rarely wakes me up, so it isn't an issue.

If you mean the natural age at which babies sleep through the night, I
think it depends on the individual baby rather than on the method of
feeding. If more ff babies seem to sleep through the night earlier, I
suspect it's because ff at night is such a hassle that some mothers take
more active measures to "help" the baby sleep through the night.

I've read a lot about induced labour usually leading to other
interventions. This is obviously not a medical opinion, but it seems to
happen with those people I know. My SIL had the birth from hell with her
second baby, which you'd expect to be easier. She was induced and went
through many hours of hard labour before they finally got the baby out by
forceps. Her ob had told her husband to prepare for a c-section. Her baby
wasn't that big either, just average size.

That was the main reason I waited for my baby to pick her own time, though
she was one week late.

I'm not sure what position I used. Semi-reclining I think, since the
nurses had propped me up a bit for pushing.

I'd read a lot about birth plans, but they're not in fashion here, so I
wrote a small "list of personal preferences" and presented it to my ob.
She was surprised to say the least. I had it attached to my hospital
admission form with her consent, but none of the birthing and postnatal
staff seemed to be aware the list existed.

But all this happened 2.5 years ago. Much can change in that time.

I've always believed in letting the baby come at the time right for her.
Sarah was 5 days overdue! I thought that was no problem since my eldest
brother was 2 wks overdue!

But I know for some there are medical reasons to induce early.

Subject: FF Supplement

Daniel woke up at 7.30am this morning, just as I was going to drive Sarah to
School (25mins drive there, 10mins drive back - b/c of traffic). I had no
time to bf him before I left, so I reached into my freezer stash to warm up
for him.

It's so sad, now there's only 1 freezer bag of ebm left. I haven't been
pumping for about 1 mth now, and have no interest/motivation to start again.
I suppose that if he wakes up a little "later" like this morning, and my
last baggie of ebm is gone, I'll just need to give him a formula feed/cow's
milk (whatever). I guess he's old enough for that.

Lai Chang, I remeber you said Vivi drinks from a cup? I was thinking if
when I start giving Daniel milk supplement, to just feed him that in a cup.
What's your experience? I might have it a little different here since Sarah
is still drinking milk from bottle off & on (when she feels like it), and I
think Daniel finds it so amusing that he'd try to grab Sarah's bottle even
when it's empty!

I'd suggest skipping the formula. If you don't have a family history of
allergy to cow's milk, Daniel should be able to handle it at this age.
Don't feel sad about giving Daniel an occasional cup of other drink; it has
to happen at some time as he grows up.

Right, Vivi has been drinking from a cup since about 10 months. We tried
the sippy cup first, but she wouldn't have it. She wanted a cup like
Mommy's, so we bought her a normal plastic cup. At first I had to help her
hold it, but she learnt to handle it around her first birthday. Whenever
she spilt her drink, I just pointed out that she had little/no more left in
the cup to drink. She was handling it like a pro by 14 months or so,
provided I filled the cup only to half mark.

But Vivi has always been very keen on imitating us. She even drinks
directly from a mineral water bottle, like her Daddy. She thinks the baby
bottles, which she sometimes pulls out of the storage drawer, are for
playing. ;)

I guess it depends on yr ob. For me, he claims that there's
no problem so didn't arrange for one also that by 8 mo, too
much bones or tissues so also cannot see the baby clearly.
He also knows that there's a long queue (esp. he's such a
busy ob.) and so only schedule me every 2 wks with me going
to a family doctor to hv my blood pressure taken in between.

My DH the kiasu one. When my number for the ob. turns up, he
runs to press for the payment number so we don't hv to wait
long to pay and book the next appt.

I also got all my supplements from my family doctor so
manage to eliminate another queue at the pharmacy. Also got
it free as under company charge for family doctor :).

Was told that the beds are to be booked as early as the 4th
mth of pregnancy. Guess I was lucky to be able to get a
single room on the 2nd day. Also my ob. told me that KKWCH
is a training hospital so if I didn't book for class B1 and
above, he might not attend to my delivery. Maybe bcos my DH
is a civil servant so I get priority in being assigned a A1
room as the lady who got admitted b4 me didn't get the A1
room she requested - complain when the nurse told me I can
shift to the A1 room.

Nowadays seems that gov. & restructured hospital are not
much cheaper than private ones. My friend a S'porean also
complain that a day stay at KKWCH nursery for her baby is
more expensive than if she had admitted her to Gleaneagles
instead. Maybe bcos she didn't deliver at KKWCH?

Hi everyone
Please advise me
Debbie had a high fever about three days ago. Nothing really serious and we
thought it was due to her teeth coming out. Her first tooth popped out ( a
little ) yesterday and the fever subsided. However a rash appeared over her
face and parts of her body. I took her to the doctor and he said, it looked
like a viral rash , probably due to her fever the last few days. My mom ,
however is worried it might be measles. Also my nephew had chicken pox. We
never went near him at all, but I think over Christmas, his mom carried
Debbie. Can the virus be passed that way ? ( Actually by Christmas, his
chicken pox was over and he had no more of the scabs etc ) The doctor
didn't think it was chicken pox either. Anyway, what should I do ? Since
what I eat can pass into the b'milk. Should I abstain from a certain food
eg seafood to avoid aggravating the rashes ? Has any of your babies ever
had a viral rash ? Also she can't sleep well because of the itch (
hopefully with the medicine, it will be better ) please help.

Hi Tracey!!

I guess the other moms will be more experienced in rendering advice on
this matter.

However, my mom did recommend curing rashes the Chinese way:-

Get some silver and golden chrysantheum(sp) at any Chinese herbal store,
boil water with the stuff for 20 minutes, let it cool and bathe baby
with the chry. water.

Mom said chry. is very gentle and won't hurt if u try.

Cyrus slept thru the nite when he's around 6 weeks. Of course, that
means a continuous 5-hour sleep stretch. He's three and a half months
old and has been sleeping through like 7 to 9 hours. I observed that
he's reduced the number fo feeds to around 6 to 7 times a day and
cluster feed (non-stop feeding for up to an hour) before he goes to bed.
He grew from 6 pounds 11 ounces to 15 pounds!

A question for Sam: is 6 feeds a day too little for a three and a half
month old?

If Cyrus is happy about that and you are bf'g as often & for as long as he
wants, that frequency should be fine!

Remember, every baby has his own pattern of needs. And that pattern may
change. It may be 6 feeds today, but 10 feeds the next, and 5 feeds a week
later. Just be prepared for changes.

Vivi had an unexplained high fever for 3 days when she was about 8 months.
After one dose of antibiotics, a rash appeared all over her face and body.
I thought it was the antibiotics but the doctor said it could be
coincidence, that the rash would probably have appeared anyway, but that it
didn't look serious. We stopped the antibiotics and just kept her cool and
clean, and the rash disappeared on its own after 2 days without any
medication.

Much later I read about something called roseola infantum which is
apparently quite common in babies and not at all serious. Its symptoms are
exactly like what Vivi had, and Debbie seems to have - high fever for 3
days followed by a rash all over. The fever subsides after the rash
appears and the baby doesn't suffer any other ill effects.

As I thought it was the antibiotics at the time, I didn't take any special
precautions in my diet. If Debbie is itching a lot, though, it may be wise
to avoid seafood for a while.

If it's measles or chicken-pox, the doctor should be able to tell.

Hope Debbie is better!

You know, when Daniel had his high fever (38.5 to 39 deg C) back when he was
7mos and then rash broke out, I brought him to see the doctor & asked the
very same question - whether it was German Measles (Roseola). My mom had
suggested the same thing back when Sarah had some rash as a baby, so I
remembered, and also had read about it. That's why I thought of it.

The doctor said it wasn't. I can't remember the reasons already. ;(

I'm not sure how much the confinement recipes will help me, but I will

I had a 7-day course after Vivi's birth, but while the massage itself felt

I thought German measles was rubella? That's what most of my sources say.
Roseola infantum doesn't have any common name like measles or pox that I
know of. Unless you count what my grandmother said about "rash caused by
the body trying to rid itself of the heat". ;)

In any case, while roseola infantum is harmless, German measles would need
precautions like staying away from pregnant women. They're not the same.

I suppose you're right. But I guess I simply asked the doctor, is it some
type of measles? ;)

He said it was a rash that resulted from the "viral type of fever". "viral
fever"? That's why no other symtoms? Actually I'd never come across fever
of this type with Sarah.

In the end, I just equated his rash to that of mine after I was better from
my own illnesses. I thought that maybe he has a sensitive body complex like
mine - especially in the skin area. ;( [DH jokingly says our children

I have a Filipino maid and she always drives me mad. That said, not all
Filipino maids are lousy, my maid in Hong Kong had worked with our
family for over 12 years and she's still with my mom and dad. My
experience is that u should get a reputable agent and interview those
maids before u decide on who to employ. I personally preferred
transferred maids (with credible reference of course) so I'd save the
trouble of catering for her adaptation.

Reminds me of my SIL. My mom was supposed to be there to help in her
confinement - my brothers stay in Austin Texas. But my mom didn't have the
courage to take the plane journey alone. I was pregnant with Daniel then
and my gynae had said it was ok to travel, but I wanted to wait until I was
at least 12 wks along since I also had morning sickness.

By the time we reached my brother's place, my niece was already 3 wks old!

I heard that my SIL had gotten up the next day after returning home from
hospital & cooked for the family! But they also have helpful friends.
Their church friends took turns to bring them lunch/dinner. And our aunt
also drove over from San Antonio for a few days to cook. I think she did
some confinement food like "chu kiok cho" - vinegared pig trotters.

Thanks for the response. Sam/Jacqueline, you're lucky that your babies
could sleep thru at such a young age. Gabriel still wakes up for about 3

Debbie still doesn't sleep through the night. Sometimes she wakes up, not
for a feed , but just to snuggle up to me. Most of the time, she wants to
drink even if its just a little. So I wake up at least twice a night once
at about midnite and another time about three or four. Her bedtime is early

Err... Jocelyn, you must have missed out that part about the growth spurts
that seemed to happen almost every mth!

At those times, Daniel would wake up EVERY HOUR or 2 from 12mn onwards. I
know it's a growth spurt b/c when I offer him the "emptier" breast, he
grumbles like mad! If I'm lucky, that pattern would last only 2 nights. If
not, it could even last a week!

And frequent waking also happens when he get a cold / fever. Sometimes
teething, but I think teething seldom affects his night sleep that badly.
More so when feeling unwell.

When the pattern of frequent waking lasts for too many days, I get rather
upset, sad to say. ;( Thankfully, that hasn't happened in about 2 or
3mths! Whew!

Hello Jacqueline, we have 2 things in common. Firstly, I also come from
HK (Apr97). Secondly, I also had a c-section. Casey was born on the 37th
week, with head cir. of 37cm. He probably has our genes for the big
head. He opened his eyes one week after birth. I didn't feel like having
milk on my breast until the 3rd night. Could you bf your baby right
after birth? My recovery was smooth though that I could walk around on
the next morning after the c-section.

Just curious. How come all Malaysian young ladies are so slim but there
are so few slim Malaysian women? (I hope this is not a sensitive
question in Singapore.) :-)

Flora,

I just wanted to add something about the difference between the
manual/electric pumps.

I loved using my Medela Mini-Electric b/c it was an electricity operated
pump. It also had automatic sucking cycles. That meant that all I needed
to do was to attach it to the breast. After a while, you'll get the hang of
putting your bra up so that the funnel stays attached, or like me, even
learn to balance it with your knee! So basically, it was "HANDS-FREE"!

And since it was "Hands Free", I could do stuff. Like for eg. make
calls/answer telephone (nobody ever asked about that noise in the
background! *hee*), surf the 'net, read & answer emails, read & post on
newsgroups, and sometimes even type out my business letters & contracts! ;)

I felt the babies at 17 and 18 weeks respectively, so I felt the second
one a little later than the first.

I second the airport. We live in the east and the airport is only 5 min
drive away. Plus of course Wei Ru gets to eat ice-cream there (actually
the mommy also likes ice-cream).
