EXCERPT FROM PARENTS LIST JANUARY 1998 (#3) Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 10:59:44 +0000 Subject: another bf report from Reuters Hi ladies, Another report on breastfeeding benefits... CHICAGO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Children breast-fed longer do better in school, with benefits that can be measured into adolescence, according to a study published on Monday. The report, from researchers at the Christchurch School of Medicine in New Zealand, was based on a a look at more than 1,000 children born there in 1977 and followed through age 18. Some of the children were breast-fed less than four months, others four to seven months and some for eight months or more while others were not breast-fed at all. The study's authors found that the longer infants were breast-fed, the higher they scored in evaluations. "It is concluded that breast-feeding is associated with small but detectable increases in child cognitive ability and educational achievement," said the report in the January issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. "These effects are pervasive, being reflected in a range of measures including standardized tests, teacher ratings and academic outcomes in high schools, and relatively long-lived, extending throughout childhood into young adulthood," it added. The authors said the findings proved valid even after accounting for the fact that breast-feeding mothers in the study tended to be older, with above-average standards of living, and did not smoke during pregnancy -- factors that could indicate the children came from more intelligent families in the first place. Breast-feeding is believed to offer a number of benefits to infants. The authors said some previous studies have suggested that fatty acids in breast milk improve cognitive abilities in children. In another article published in the same journal, researchers at the University of Bristol in England reported that putting infants to sleep on their backs -- as is recommended to avoid crib death -- had no lasting impact on development. They said a study of 10,000 children born in 1991 and 1992 uncovered some evidence of reduced motor and social skills and diminished developmental scores at six months of age among back sleepers; but they said this effect disappeared by the age of 18 months. The pediatrics group has recommended since 1992 that infants sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Those recipes are "tested" b/c when I had Daniel, I basically planned my own confinement foods. I've adapted some of them to the way I like it done. Before I delivered, what I did was write out a Table of Dishes under different headings of eg. Fish, Beef, Chicken, Vegetable, Soups. Then under those different headings, I had recipes. I then told my maid to choose 1 meat, 1 vege, & 1 soup to cook. She managed to follow recipes fairly well despite having been in Singapore only 1 mth then. In the end, however, I was going through the fridge every day, and then writing out that day's menu for her to follow! So much for my plan! You are right about him that he likes to throw them around and make noises. Besides, he also brings the rattle block to his ear to listen & kisses the little boy when I bring it to his face. However, he hasn't played the dinosaur set yet as he is quite reserved about new things. I wonder if other babies have this kind of behavior around this age. I have come across a pretty good website for moms who use cloth diapers though and here is the URL http://members.octonline.com/born2luv/ I delivered my second and third babies without medication. It was painful, but the midwife kept telling me " coming soon, coming soon, no need to use painkillers " so I gave birth without the painkillers. My first baby was delivered using painkillers though. I took the lot, even the epidural. But I suffered from severe back ache later on and nausea. Also, my baby was born a little sleepy. But with the other two, I found them to be so alert when they were born. Midwife says its because no painkillers were used. They were born, and started looking around straightaway !!! Only went there to visit friends and been to one of the class where they teach you how to bath the baby. At least saw a life demo. (KKWCH uses dummy to teach) but the baby cried (got scared) - my friend insisted on not letting her baby be the "sacrifice". Can't say much abt their bfing advice. My friend never got any, only her friends who hv bf taught her how to latch on. I never take any medication for my delivery (afraid of any effects on the baby). They kept asking me to take epidural but I refused (heard that could hv after effects if not adminster properly into spine). They gave me the gas mask where I use it when in pain, did relive my pain until the time for me to deliver (don't know the baby wants out, only felt as if want to pass motion, also pain period is nearer). For me the labour pain only lasted 3 hours. Before that my water bag broke but no pain, was able to lie down in the delivery suite eating and reading. The midwives were surprised that I was so relaxed, maybe it helping my controlling of my breathing - whenever I felt any pain, I do a deep breathing. An advice is for first time mummies to take up the antenatal classes. I never had any, just do some reading up. Luckily my scuba diving training taught me how to control my breathing. However I had a hard time in pushing out the baby. It lasted close to an hour with her head just appearing but the midwife advice a forceps delivery. Painful but bearable. I'll still opt for a natural birth the next time round. However this time I'll immediately bf the baby. >>4) I notice a lot of discussion on breastfeeding here. Is there a law against that, or is it just people prefer >>not to? Most mothers do bf their babies here but drop out after 2 mths when they return to work. Also most MILs here do not support bfing. They get mad that we're not following the confiinement tradition: (1) not bathing for first 2 wks (I hv towel bath for compromise), only special herbal bath for the next 20 days (2) eating lots of ginger & drinking DOM (a big NO-NO for bfing) (3) not drinking plain water (belief that plain water makes yr face fluffy, must hv ginger to drive away wind) (4) not hving the fan/wind blowing at u (5) don't touch water (glad that I don't hv to do dishes for 1 whole mth. (6) ... I guess that bfing info is not provided early to the parents & grandparents. Never heard of BMSG until I delivered. My DH only support bfing bcos it makes the baby intelligent, provide comfort. He doesn't believes in exclusively bfing. He is now pressing me to give cereals to Sherlayn so that she'll not wake up in the middle of the nite to which I strongly opposed, luckily my MIL is not in flavour of that either. They also believe the bm is not filling, the baby needs bm every 2 hrs as opposed to fm (3 hrs) so must supplement everyday. I think we asians are conservatives. No way are we going to bare ourselves in public. There's a construction site just opposite our flat and my DH insists on closing the curtains when I bf. So I would go up to the side of the second storey and feed her then. Well at least it was quiet and nobody ever goes there during that time. No, I didn't and don't have morning sickness. At times I gag a bit when brushing my teeth, especially if my stomach is really growling with hunger, but nothing that can be called morning sickness. And that's why I needed to see a doctor to confirm both pregnancies before DH would believe me. Now that I'm one of those bf'g while pregnant, I really find it easier to offer the breast than to run around trying to keep a 2-year-old entertained. In any case, given Vivi's wilfulness, I can't even begin to imagine surviving any weaning attempt. The only issue I have is the nipple soreness. But hey, if I've survived childbirth and all the early bf'ing pains with a newborn, I can psyche myself to survive this too. ;) Lai Chang Mommy to Vivi (2.5yo) Date: Tue, 06 Jan 1998 22:25:21 +0800 Subject: BF in Public (Re: new member with questions) At 07:15 AM 1/6/98 +0800, Tracey wrote: >You know the thing I find the oddest Sam ? Most of your questions have been answered by the other mothers, but here's my 2 cents' addition: > >2) Anyone using/have used cloth diapers? Any recommendations on > >brands? When Vivi was born, we tried cloth for 2 days and gave up. She was pooping every meal (i.e. every 1 to 2 hours) and there was no way anyone could have washed that number of soiled diapers daily and keep sane! We tried again when she grew older and her pooping frequency stabilized to not more than 2 or 3 times a day, with more success. We used Johnson & Johnson 5-star diapers, the kind that you have to fold. We could tell Vivi loved the cloth, because when we put her in disposables for going out, she kept tugging at her diaper. We did buy and try a few prefolded terry cloth diapers, but they were so thick and took so long to dry even under a good sun, that we gave them up after one round of washing. > >3) I recently switched hospitals to Mt. Elizabeth. Anybody else > >deliver there, if so what are your experiences? Has anyone delivered > >without medication? If so, how difficult was it? I can't tell you about Mt Elizabeth, but I delivered without medication, if you discount the gas mask which I used in the last 2 hours or so when the pain got really intense. The gas did nothing for the pain but helped my muscles to relax. I had quite a short labour, no more than 5 hours from the time I reached the hospital to the time the baby came out, so that could be one reason it was manageable without any pain medication. What I liked was being alert and mobile after the birth. Also, I didn't need any of the pain-killers they offered for the recovery (I had an episiotomy), possibly because my body had been numbed to normal pain after the pain of childbirth ;), and so I had no worries about bf'ing my baby. > >4) I notice a lot of discussion on breastfeeding here. Still, the situation today is much better than 2.5 years ago when I gave birth to Vivi, so there's hope yet for Singapore. Maybe by the time my second baby is 2.5, the average Singaporean won't freak out at my bf'ing a 2.5-year-old like they do today. ;) There is no law for or against public bf'ing, but most Asians are shy by nature. I didn't gather enough courage to bf in public until Vivi was about 3 or 4 months old. Since then, I've bf'ed just about everywhere and never got any negative remarks or stares. I also didn't see any other mothers bf'ing in public until recently at the zoo, but I guess most of the passersby who walked past me bf'ing didn't see me bf'ing either. I didn't know that mother at the zoo was bf'ing until I'd sat down directly opposite her for more than 5 minutes. Even then, I needed a second look to be sure she was bf''ing as she was fully covered, and that is with my own bf'ing experience. I doubt the other people in that room knew. Hey! Next time you go to the zoo, call me! I live so nearby. ;) And I think Sarah would love the companions. We go rather often. sam mommy to 3.5yo Sarah & 11.5mo Daniel Visit Our Family's WebPage [http://members.tripod.com/~TheChengs] Subject: Re: Fw: new member with questions At 10:30 PM 1/6/98 +0800, Jacqueline wrote: I'd breastfed in restaurants, in >>shops....etc. although I'd prefer to breast feed in the "less crowded" >>public premises. I have a list of these rooms on my bf page under "discrete bf" or public bf, not sure which. << I have not seen any moms BFing in public, guess they are very skillful in covering themselves up!!>> To bf in public, it's good to be wearing a nursing bra - one that's easy to do up & undo the cup for easier access. Wear separates - that's my favourite nursing attire. Lift up the top from the bottom to bf. That will be quite discrete. Did you see the pic of me bf'g Daniel? But then I'm cheating a little. I was wearing a nursing top. I really took a picture of that so that I could email it to the lady (who sewed it up for me) to see. sam mommy to 3.5yo Sarah & 11.5mo Daniel Visit Our Family's WebPage [http://members.tripod.com/~TheChengs] End of Excerpt------
